Mumbai | Single mother alleges bias in RTE process

MUMBAI: There seems to be no end to troubles in the online admission process for seats reserved under the Right to Education Act, 2009. Applications of several children raised by single mothers are allegedly being rejected by the education department.

The Act says a child from the weaker section is one whose parents’ or guardian’s income is below Rs 1 lakh. “After filling up the form, I went to the Matunga centre for verification but was told that only the father’s certificate will be accepted. I didn’t have it and hence went to the education department with my complaint,” said Shabana Sikandar, a single mother.

Parents and Anudanit Shiksha Bacho Samiti activists will stage a protest at the BMC education officer’s office on Saturday. However, department officials said instructions have already been given to accept such applications.
